The Family Camp Out Program provides underserved families in Yarmouth County with an opportunity to experience camping in a supportive, welcoming, and affordable way.

For many participants, this is their first camping experience. Through the use of community camping kits and campsite sponsorships, families can enjoy a night in nature while learning basic camping skills, building confidence outdoors, and spending quality time together.

Our goal is simple: to ensure that more families have access to the benefits of outdoor recreation, regardless of their financial circumstances or previous camping experience.

What is Included?

Selected families will receive:

  • A reserved campsite for one overnight stay
  • Access to a community camping kit containing essential camping equipment
  • Information and guidance to help make the experience successful
  • Opportunities to build camping confidence and outdoor recreation skills

Families are responsible for:

  • Food and beverages
  • Sleeping bags and bedding
  • Personal items
  • Firewood and any optional camping supplies

Many families face barriers that make participation in camping difficult. Equipment costs, lack of experience, and limited access to recreation opportunities can all prevent families from enjoying the outdoors.

The Family Camp Out Program helps reduce those barriers and creates a welcoming introduction to camping for families who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

Who Can Apply?

The program is intended for families living in Yarmouth County who would benefit from support accessing outdoor recreation opportunities.

Priority may be given to:

  • Families experiencing financial barriers
  • Families new to camping
  • Equity-deserving community members
  • Families referred by community organizations

How to Apply

Option 1: Community Organization Referral

Families may be referred by a local non-profit organization, community agency, school-based support program, or equity-seeking group serving Yarmouth County.

Examples may include:

  • SchoolsPlus
  • YREACH
  • Family support organizations
  • Community service agencies
  • Other local non-profit partners

Option 2: Direct Family Application

Families who are not connected to a community organization are welcome to apply directly.

Direct applicants will be asked to submit:

  • A completed application form
  • A brief letter of reference or support explaining why the family would benefit from participating in the program

Selection Process

Applications are reviewed by program organizers following the application deadline.

Selection is based on:

  • Demonstrated need
  • Access barriers to outdoor recreation
  • Interest in participating
  • Program capacity

Due to limited spaces, not all applicants may be selected each year.
