Jack ‘O’ Lantern Parade

The Jack O Lantern Parade is Back! Monday, October 25th at 6:00pm, at Gateway Park, corner of William and Southeast Street.

This year the Jack ‘O’ Lantern Walking Parade will look a little different, as we will be holding it at Gateway Park.  The parade will still happen, but enclosed in the park using the track that encircles the field.  The Parade starts at 6:00pm; we will have the kids line up and do a lap or 2 around the track. We will have music playing, photo areas and treat bags and more!

We ask that people who want to watch the parade do not sit in their vehicles, but come and join us outside on the track area to watch the parade. We will have some photo areas set up for family pictures!  We also will be having a Pumpkin Carving contest as well!

For the Pumpkin carving contest, please drop-off pumpkins from 5:00-6:00pm as we will be lighting the track with the entries.  (Please light your pumpkin with a battery operated light).  Photos and judging will happen on the Yarmouth Recreation Facebook page.

Parking is limited at Gateway Park and additional parking can be found at St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

For more information contact Sara at Yarmouth Recreation, 902-742-8868 or
***As per Health Nova Scotia guidelines we will be requiring proof of vaccine for anyone over 12 for admittance to the track.***

Whats a Halloween Light Drive?
We are asking for submissions of addresses from people around the community that would like to help bring some Halloween Cheer!

We will collect all address submissions and create a google map of the area for people to drive around on their own time and enjoy the spooky evenings throughout the week of October 22-31.
All addresses submitted will be included in the map.

Trail Challenge Launching October 1!

Welcome to our THIRD Walk Challenge! We are so excited that you are asking for yet another challenge to keep you walking and make our community happier and healthier!

This challenge is going to work a little differently, and hopefully increase our ability to socialize now that our Covid directives are loosening!

How is this one different?
Well, for starters we won’t be giving prizes to our 1st, 2nd or 3rd participants. We want you to excel and push yourself – don’t get us wrong.. our goal is to encourage everyone, not only our marathoners and super active participants, we want everyone to have a fair chance at winning some prizes! When you register you will have an option in the form to add in friends who you have encouraged to join and both of you (multiple entries count as well) will be entered into a draw for local gift cards! (Local residents*) To clarify, this is still an individual challenge so you will submit only your steps and your friends who register would do the same on the form. You do not have to only count steps on trails, all activity counts.
We are also planning on group led hikes in the evenings throughout the fall season leading up to Christmas! These will be lead by Sara, come out say hi, and have a chat while getting active! As this challenge will run from October until December 31, just in time to pick up on January 1st with Walk Fundy returning – these hikes will take place on Tuesday evenings @ 6pm weather depending and will shift from different rail trails around the Town of Yarmouth, Municipality of Yarmouth, keep an eye on our social media pages for hike locations on the Monday prior! We want to highlight our local gems, we have so many gorgeous wooded trails! Feel free to bring a lantern** or a flashlight** and bright clothing** (safety vests please), if you are joining us in the evenings as dusk will start to fall earlier as we progress through this series.
We will still be asking for you to please submit on the form weekly (as we have with each challenge thus far) so we can also do draws throughout the 3 months of the program for additional gift cards, we will not be advertising which weeks we will do the draws to keep you on your toes with your submissions!

So, what’s the challenge you ask?
Trail Challenge!
Within Nova Scotia we have 56KM of Rail Trail, this trail connects with the rest of Canada’s trail system that has 24,000km! For more information on trails in Nova Scotia please click HERE

Our goal will be different this time as well, we will be giving you a “challenge card” which you can find by scrolling below. This is for an additional prize draw! When you find all of the trails shown on the card and submit a picture to before November 1st. We will be highlighting the trails within our area monthly, and release another set of trails to find in November.

What’s our step goal? While 56Km of rail trail in NS seems to be a little short for this challenge, we will be challenging you to hit 920,000 steps before December 31st!

So how does this goal break down?
There are 92 days within the duration of this program, the suggested step goal per physical activity guidelines is 10,000 steps per day, this translates to 920,000 steps within this time frame! The KM goal we will be walking is 736km. This is just a quick jaunt, its pretty much to Fredericton, NB from Yarmouth, NS taking the main roads. Easy right?!
For a final portion of this challenge, the person who has walked the most past the 920,000 steps we will have a prize for you at the end!
Good luck and keep walking!
